Griffith Observatory is located on the south of Mount Hollywood in Griffith Park. It is a public observatory from which you can get a panoramic view of the whole of Los Angeles including Hollywood, Downtown Los Angeles, and the Pacific Ocean. It is named after Griffith J. Griffith and this Observatory is more popular among people who are interested in space and science-related things and love to explore space.
No doubt this is one of the best places to visit in Los Angeles that can give you a unique impression that will last for a lifetime. You will see exhibits on Astronomy, planets, history, special events, daily programs, Griffith Park, Samuel Oschin Planetarium, and many other things. Entry in the Griffith Observatory is completely free so you don’t have to worry about your finances before visiting this place. You can see the outstanding view of the city from the Observatory.
The Griffith Observatory was built in the year 1935 and then went into renovation from the year 2002-2006. The main objective of the Griffith Observatory was to promote education, experiential astronomy, and science literacy. From different countries, millions of visitors visit Griffith Observatory every year which makes it one of the most popular places in Los Angeles, California.
Inside the observatory, there are many interesting things that you will never see in any other places such as a close-up of the Milky Way galaxy and a Tesla coil that runs daily as per the schedule. Other cool things that you will see are the eclipses, tides, seasons, moon phases, etc. If you are interested in knowing more about the Griffith Observatory then you can also see shows in the Planetarium located on the main floor.
The telescopes located outside of the observatory are open for everyone at all times there’s also a giant telescope located inside the observatory which is only for display as people are not allowed to look through it. Apart from this many big Hollywood movies were shot in this place including The Terminator, Charlie’s Angels, The Split, Terminator Salvation, San Andreas, Transformers, Rebel, and many more.
Another good thing about the Griffith Observatory is that you can see the sun’s live images via the solar telescope and each evening there are free public telescopes which are located on the roof and on the lawn which allow visitors to see the beautiful night sky full of stars. You can also watch their daily shows that run in the Samuel Oschin Planetarium.
Their daily shows are very informative and good and the good thing is they are not very long they last from 15 min to 30 min. You can watch shows like Big Picture Talk, The Once and Future Griffith Observatory, Clues from Comets, Local Noon in the Gottlieb Transit Corridor, and Tesla Coil Demonstration you can watch their live shows too.
Every show’s timings are different so it is better to look at their website regarding the price and time of the shows.
In the observatory, food or drinks are not allowed but you can eat at their Café which is located inside. One small problem in Griffith Observatory is regarding parking as most of the time parking is full but to deal with this problem you can take their membership which means you can park one vehicle at a time there without any problem.
